Jujutsu Kaisen is a complete manga series by Gege Akutami, published by Shueisha from 2018 to 2024. The series concluded with 30 volumes (including Vol. 0, a prequel one-shot collected as a standalone volume). The story follows Yuji Itadori, a physically gifted high school student who swallows a cursed finger belonging to the most powerful curse in history — Ryomen Sukuna — and is subsequently enrolled in the Tokyo Jujutsu High School to control his power. Jujutsu Kaisen is known for its visceral fight choreography, high character mortality, and the Shibuya Incident arc, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest arc in modern shonen manga. All 30 volumes (including Vol. 0) are available from Viz Media.

Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Reading Order

1. Read FIRST: Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 0 (Prequel)

Volume 0 — Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School — is a standalone prequel following Yuta Okkotsu, a different protagonist whose story directly sets up key elements of the main series (particularly the character of Geto Suguru). Read Vol. 0 first, before Vol. 1. It is not required to understand the main story but significantly enriches it and introduces a character who becomes central later.

2. Vs. Mahito Arc (Volumes 1–5)

Yuji enters Tokyo Jujutsu High and meets his classmates Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro under sensei Nanami Kento. The crew faces the mutable curse Mahito, whose ability to reshape souls makes him one of manga’s most genuinely terrifying villains. The Soul/Transfiguration system is established here.

3. Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc (Volumes 5–9)

A joint event between Tokyo and Kyoto Jujutsu High schools — ostensibly a competition but interrupted by a coordinated curse attack. Introduces Kyoto characters including Aoi Todo, who becomes one of the most beloved side characters in the series. The battle choreography here set the standard for what Ufotable later animated.

4. Shibuya Incident Arc (Volumes 8–16)

The centerpiece of Jujutsu Kaisen and one of the most acclaimed arcs in modern shonen. Curses execute a massive terrorist operation in Shibuya during Halloween, sealing the strongest sorcerers and unleashing chaos. The arc features a relentless, escalating series of fights with permanent, devastating consequences for nearly every character. Nothing is the same afterward. Essential reading.

5. Culling Game Arc (Volumes 16–26)

In the aftermath of Shibuya, Kenjaku initiates the Culling Game — a lethal competition that forces sorcerers to kill each other. The arc expands the cast enormously and features Yuta Okkotsu (from Vol. 0) taking a central role. The rules and macro-strategy of the game give it a different texture than earlier arcs.

6. Final Arc (Volumes 26–30)

The final confrontation between the sorcerers and Sukuna at full power. The finale divides the fanbase — Akutami’s choices are bold and deliberately subversive. The series ends with its unique, darkly comedic tone intact.

Jujutsu Kaisen Spinoffs and Extras

These are optional companion works. The main series is self-contained.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Thorny Road at Dawn

A bonus chapter / short spinoff. Optional; best read after finishing the main series.

Should You Read Jujutsu Kaisen or Watch the Anime First?

The Jujutsu Kaisen anime by MAPPA is exceptional — widely regarded as one of the best animated series of the 2020s for its fight animation quality. Season 1 covers the Vs. Mahito and Kyoto arcs; the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film covers Vol. 0. Season 2 covers the Gojo Past arc and the Shibuya Incident. The Shibuya Incident in particular is considered peak modern anime animation. As of 2026, the anime has not yet adapted the Culling Game or the final arc, so reading the manga is required to experience the complete story.
